New Sounds

#4696, Winter Music

Episode Summary

Listen to wintery music, including a reworking of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons from German composer Max Richter; a post-rock Four Seasons by guitarist Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs); a magical work for vocal octet Roomful of Teeth in just intonation by Michael Harrison; and music from Scandinavian musician Sinikka Langeland. Listen to German keyboardist, composer, and producer Max Richter’s new version of Vivaldi Recomposed score for period instruments. The New Four Seasons features violinist Elena Urioste and the musicians of Chineke! Orchestra, and uses gut strings and vintage synthesizers to create a “grittier, more punk rock sound,” (DG liner notes.) Then, hear a post-rock four seasons: “Winter”, from Nick Zinner, perhaps best known as the guitarist from the veteran indie rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It’s from his 41 Strings, a set of 4 pieces of symphonic post-rock, one for each season of the year. In addition to the strings, the work calls for 8 electric guitars, two synths, two electric basses, and three drummers. Also, there’s the piece, “Winter Rune”, by Sinikka Langeland, a composer, singer and master of the kantele (Finnish table harp,) who is half Finnish, and half Norwegian. Then, listen to the voices of Roomful of Teeth in just intonation, from the work Just Constellation by Michael Harrison, a composer who studied with La Monte Young. Plus, there’s ambient country music by New York band SUSS; classic synthesizer work by the electronic music pioneer Wendy Carlos; and more. - Caryn Havlik Program #4696,  Winter Music (First aired 12/21/22) ARTIST: Wendy CarlosWORK: Winter [1:27]RECORDING: Sonic SeasoningsSOURCE: East Side Digital #81372. Out of print. INFO: wendycarlos.com ARTIST: Max Richter, Elena Urioste, Chineke!
