#4715, Love Songs Around the World

Episode Summary

Spin the globe and hear love songs by Netherlands-based Ethiopian singer Minyeshu, Argentinian musician Federico Aubele, UK-based South African cellist Abel Selaocoe, Afro-Peruvian songstress Susana Baca, and Norway-based Afghani musician Hamid Sakhizada. Listen to a love song from Netherlands-based, Ethiopian-born singer Minyeshu, and her record, Netsa – meaning ‘free’ in Amharic. Then, there’s music by Sudanese-born, Brooklyn-based (by way of Yemen) singer, Alsarah  & her band The Nubatones, who play an infectious blend of East African folk and Western pop. Also, hear “True Love” by Hamid Sakhizada, a musician from Afghanistan who plays the the two-stringed, long-necked lute known as dambura. After he immersed himself in the study of Hazara folk music in Pakistan, he later had to relocate to Norway because of the persecution involved in keeping the culture alive. Listen to an original song, “Lerato ( Love)”, inspired by South African and Tanzanian musical tradition from the Manchester-based South African cellist Abel Selaocoe, off his 2022 album Where is Home (Hae Ke Kae). Plus, songs from Romanian duo Balkan Taksim, Afro-Peruvian songstress Susana Baca, and a work by U.S. Poet Laureate and sax player Joy Harjo of the Muscogee Creek Nation. And more. -Caryn Havlik Program #4715, Love Songs Around the World (First aired 2/14/23) ARTIST: Najma / Church of BettyWORK: Aaj Madhosh Hua Jaye Re [1:23]RECORDING: Forbidden KissSOURCE: Shanachie #64063INFO: shanachie.com ARTIST: MinyeshuWORK: Getee [4:37]RECORDING: NetsaSOURCE: ARC MusicINFO: https://naxos.lnk.to/NetsaEL ARTIST: Balkan TaksimWORK: Anadolka [4:42]RECORDING: Disko TelegrafSOURCE: Buda MusiqueINFO: budamusique.bandcamp.com ARTIST: Hamid SakhizadaWORK: True Love (from Daykondi) [3:50]RECORDING: Dai RaftSOURCE: Grappa Musikkforlag/LidioINFO: grappa.no ARTIST: Alsarah & the NubatonesWORK: Habibi Taal [3:18]RECORDING: SiltSOURCE: Wonderwheel RecordsINFO: wonderwheelrecordings.bandcamp.com ARTIST: Susan McKeown /Ensemble TartitWORK: Oro mhile gra (A thousand times my love) [4:29]RECORDING: Sweet LibertySOURCE: World Village #468029INFO: worldvillagemusic.com ARTIST: Najma / Church of BettyWORK: Aaj Madhosh Hua Jaye Re [4:23]RECORDING: Forbidden KissSOURCE: Shanachie #64063INFO: shanachie.com ARTIST: Xylouris WhiteWORK: Only Love [3:30]RECORDING: MotherSOURCE: Bella UnionINFO: bellaunion.com ARTIST: Federico AubeleWORK: Este amor [3:36]RECORDING: Amatoria SOURCE: ESL Music INFO: Try Amazon.com, AppleMusic or Spotify ARTIST: Abel SelaocoeWORK: Lerato ( Love) [4:22]RECORDING: Where is home (Hae Ke Kae) SOURCE: Warner ClassicsINFO: warnerclassics.com ARTIST: Susana BacaWORK: De Los Amores [5:14]RECORDING: Eco De SombrasSOURCE: Luaka BopINFO: luakabop.com ARTIST: Joy Harjo          WORK: How Love Blows Through The Trees [5:21]RECORDING: I Pray For My Enemies  SOURCE: Sunyata RecordsINFO: joyharjo.com/music/i-pray-for-my-enemies
