Composer, poet, and performer JJJJJerome Ellis’ work includes time-bending soundscapes using saxophone, flute, dulcimer, electronics, and vocals; scores for plays and podcasts; albums combining spoken word with ambient and jazz textures; theatrical explorations involving live music and storytelling; and music-video-poems that seek to transfigure historical archives. From a New Sounds Live co-presentation with National Sawdust, hear most of JJJJJerome Ellis’s improvised sound bath, in the Fountain series of work on hammered dulcimer, tenor saxophone, piano, electronics, and voice, recorded in Feb. 2023. Then, sound artist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Lea Bertucci deploys bass clarinet, alto sax, manipulated tape, organ, a venu wooden flute, and field recording on her record, A Visible Length of Light. Hear music both composed and improvised that is the product of what Bertucci describes as “the feeling of physically inhabiting a space, when the relationship to that space has become overwhelming, and provokes the desire to seek truth, transcendence, and moments of comfort, disquiet and catharsis through confusion,”(Lea Bertucci’s Bandcamp). There’s also hymn-like work from German composer and multi-instrumentalist Sven Helbig, and his record, Skills, which combines three French horns, tuba, and the Mondeana String Quartet, in addition to Helbig on electronics. - Caryn Havlik #4727, JJJJJerome Ellis, Live at National Sawdust (First aired 3/15/23) ARTIST: JJJJJerome EllisWORK: Fountain #3 [1:15]RECORDING: Fountain #3SOURCE: NNA TapesINFO: jeromeellis.bandcamp.com ARTIST: JJJJJerome EllisWORK: Fountains, saxophone & electronics [18:16]RECORDING: Live at National Sawdust, Feb. 2023SOURCE: This performance not commercially available.INFO: https://jjjjjerome.com/about ARTIST: JJJJJerome EllisWORK: Fountains, , hammered dulcimer, voice, and electronics [6:56]RECORDING: Live at National Sawdust, Feb. 2023SOURCE: This performance not commercially available.INFO: https://jjjjjerome.com/about ARTIST: JJJJJJerome Ellis, James Harrison MonacoWORK: Fountains, saxophone, piano, & electronics [1:57]RECORDING: Live at National Sawdust, Feb. 2023SOURCE: This performance not commercially available.INFO: https://jjjjjerome.com/about ARTIST: Lea BertucciWORK: To Bridge the Chasm of Experience [7:20]RECORDING: A Visible Length of LightSOURCE: Cibachrome EditionsINFO: leabertucci.bandcamp.com ARTIST: Sven HelbigWORK: Immersion [5:09]RECORDING: SKILLSSOURCE: Modern RecordingsINFO: https://svenhelbig.lnk.to/Skills ARTIST: Sven HelbigWORK: Vision [1:13]RECORDING: SKILLSSOURCE: Modern RecordingsINFO: https://svenhelbig.lnk.to/Skills
