Hear a swirl of drones from French bagpipe (veuze), Croatian bagpipe, and Bulgarian bagpipe (kaba gaida) with highland pipes, plus work by Irish band Lankum and British violist Alison Cotton. Irish band Lankum, on their latest record, False Lankum combines drones and glissandos with spellbinding vocals and a doom-laden arrangement for a raw, gothic experience of hopelessness on “Go Dig My Grave”. Then, listen to the French bagpipe (veuze) in music by the duo of multi-instrumentalist François Robin and electronic artist Mathias Delplanque. In their tune, “Perdu”, layers of bagpipe, violin, Armenian duduk, and mizmar (Arabic single or double reed wind instrument) are arranged into a pulsing drone-trance-slow-build until the bagpipes soar above. Not to be outdone with bagpipes, hear Croatian bagpipe and highland pipes from The Vex Collection, a band led by Vicente Hansen Atria (drums, gongs, electronics) and Mat Muntz (bass, Croatian bagpipe, homemade woodwinds) and other unheard-of combinations of traditional instruments and homemade creations, all with “a philosophy of mad-scientific experimentation in their exploration of uncharted sonic space,” (Bandcamp.) From their self-titled record, they also feature highland bagpiper Matthew Welch and Korean woodwind virtuoso gamin on the tune, “Fugue”. There’s also psych-folk recast with a harmonium drone by London-based viola player, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Alison Cotton, who is half of acclaimed songwriting partnership The Left Outsides, a member of The Trimdon Grange Explosion, and occasional contributor to the United Bible Studies collective. From her album of tone-poems called Only Darkness Now, listen to her stretched-out and brooding interpretation of Dorothy Carter’s song, “Shirt of Lace.” [Carter is a folk troubadour, and a co-founder of Mediæval Bæbes.] Plus, work by British-Indian singer Sheila Chandra, who blends elements of Irish, Islamic, and English folk traditions in "Lagan Love" from drones to ragas. And more. -Caryn Havlik Program #4730, Folk-Drone Music (First aired 3/23/23) ARTIST: François Robin & Mathias Delplanque WORK: Perdu [1:30]RECORDING: L'ombre de la bête SOURCE: Parenthèses RecordsINFO: parenthesesrecords.bandcamp.com ARTIST: LankumWORK: Go Dig My Grave [8:41]RECORDING: False LankumSOURCE: Rough Trade RecordsINFO: https://lankum.ffm.to/falselankum ARTIST: François Robin & Mathias Delplanque WORK: Perdu [6:47]RECORDING: L'ombre de la bête SOURCE: Parenthèses RecordsINFO: parenthesesrecords.bandcamp.com ARTIST: The Vex Collection (feat.
