New Sounds

#4822, New Sounds Live: Kavita Shah, From National Sawdust

Episode Summary

Kavita Shah is a New York based singer is an award-winning vocalist, composer, ethnomusicology researcher, and educator whose original projects blend modern jazz, new music, and world traditions. Her repertoire includes her own songs, jazz standards, Stevie Wonder covers, and the songs of the late Cesaria Evora. Evora was the leading singer in the style known as morna, a bluesy, emotional music from the Cape Verde Islands, a longtime Portuguese colony off the coast of West Africa. Evora died in 2011 but Kavita Shah is keeping her music alive with her new album called Cape Verdean Blues. From the New Sounds Live Concert Series, Kavita Shah performs music from this album of mainly traditional Cape Verdean music as a tribute to morna singer Cesária Évora, the archipelago, and its welcoming people. Recorded at National Sawdust in September 2023, Shah was joined by master musicians from the islands: guitarist Bau (Cesária Évora's former musical director), guitarist Jorge Almeida, percussionist Miroca Paris, and special guest vocalist Fantcha.
