New Sounds

#4839 With JJJJJerome Ellis, from the Soundcheck Podcast

Episode Summary

JJJJJerome Ellis describes himself as “a stuttering, Afro-Caribbean composer, poet, and performer.” His last album, The Clearing, was a brilliant mix of sax, electronic music, and storytelling, featuring his own, stuttering voice. But his new project doesn’t involve speech – though it is inspired by prayer. It’s called Compline, named after the old evening prayers of Western Christianity, and it’s a series of contemplative works, "connected meditations" for solo piano. From the Soundcheck Podcast series, JJJJJerome Ellis plays improvisations on Compline, his new set of piano works, in-studio. Also, listen to new music from Turkish pianist, electronic music producer, and composer Büşra Kayıkçı who draws on the harmonic language and repeating cycles of Minimalism, but she also muddies the sonic waters by adding stray sounds, some from the creaking and thunking of her instrument and some added via subtle electronics, (Schaefer, 2023). Plus, music from Russian pianist/composer Anton Batagov, and more.  ARTIST: JJJJJerome EllisWORK: Fountain #3 [1:15]RECORDING: Fountain #3SOURCE: NNA TapesINFO: jeromeellis.bandcamp.com ARTIST: JJJJJerome EllisWORK: Improvisation on Compline, first [6:24]RECORDING: Live for the Soundcheck Podcast, Dec. 2023SOURCE:  This performance not commercially availableINFO: jeromeellis.bandcamp.com ARTIST: JJJJJerome EllisWORK: Improvisation on Compline, second [4:34]RECORDING: Live for the Soundcheck Podcast, Dec. 2023SOURCE:  This performance not commercially availableINFO: jeromeellis.bandcamp.com ARTIST: La Monte Young WORK: The Magic Opening Chord, excerpt [:33]RECORDING: The Well-Tuned PianoSOURCE: Gramavision 5 CD-set, #18-8701INFO: Out of print.
