New Sounds

#4967, With Adam Tendler

Episode Summary

The New York based pianist (and author) Adam Tendler, (called a "modern-music evangelist" by Time Out New York) visits the studio to present works from a collection of commissioned pieces called Inheritances, bought and paid for with cash received in an envelope in a parking lot after the passing of his father. Hear in-studio performances of a few of the pieces, as well as those from the recording by a broad spectrum of composers (and friends) Devonte Hynes, inti figgis-vizueta, Laurie Anderson, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Darian Donovan Thomas, Missy Mazzoli, and others. For the project, Tendler also approached composers not usually known for piano music like Pamela Z and Ted Hearne and came away with some gripping and unexpected “little masterpieces” (The New York Times). Tendler acknowledges the oddness and the impertinence of the commissioning project while reflecting on how the works and the project have been a vessel for processing emotions and starting conversations. For some, Inheritances can be a powerful meditation on confronting our past, while the program “tells a universal story of lineage, loss, and place” that resonates with listeners, (Lincoln Center event listing). - Caryn Havlik Program #4967, With Adam Tendler (First aired 1/17/2025) ARTIST: Adam TendlerWORK: Devonte Hynes: Morning Piece [1:00]RECORDING: InheritancesSOURCE: New Amsterdam RecordsINFO: https://adamtendler.bandcamp.com/album/inheritances ARTIST: Adam TendlerWORK: Missy Mazzoli: Forgiveness Machine [3:29]RECORDING: Live, WNYC Dec. 2024SOURCE: This performance not commercially availableINFO: The work appears on Inheritances https://adamtendler.bandcamp.com/album/inheritances ARTIST: Adam Tendler, Laurie AndersonWORK: Laurie Anderson: Remember, I Created You [4:37]RECORDING: InheritancesSOURCE: New Amsterdam RecordsINFO: https://adamtendler.bandcamp.com/album/inheritances ARTIST: Adam TendlerWORK: Sarah Kirkland Snider: The Plum Tree I Planted Still There [4:43]RECORDING: Live, WNYC Dec. 2024SOURCE: This performance not commercially availableINFO: The work appears on Inheritances https://adamtendler.bandcamp.com/album/inheritances ARTIST: Adam Tendler, Laurie AndersonWORK: Pamela Z: Thank You So Much [:25]RECORDING: InheritancesSOURCE: New Amsterdam RecordsINFO: https://adamtendler.bandcamp.com/album/inheritances ARTIST: Adam Tendler, Laurie AndersonWORK: Darian Donovan Thomas: We Don't Need to Tend This Garden, They're Wildflowers [9:21]RECORDING: InheritancesSOURCE: New Amsterdam RecordsINFO: https://adamtendler.bandcamp.com/album/inheritances ARTIST: Adam TendlerWORK: inti figgis-vizueta: hushing [4:11]RECORDING: Live, WNYC Dec. 2024SOURCE: This performance not commercially availableINFO: The work appears on Inheritances https://adamtendler.bandcamp.com/album/inheritances ARTIST: Adam TendlerWORK: Devonte Hynes: Morning Piece [5:07]RECORDING: InheritancesSOURCE: New Amsterdam RecordsINFO: https://adamtendler.bandcamp.com/album/inheritances
