New Sounds

#4977, Sonic Hauntings

Episode Summary

Listen to an hour of Sonic Hauntings – either places or a ship - haunted by whispered voices of the past in music by UK-based sound artist Joseph Young; transatlantic folk songwriter Cinder Well; Brooklyn-based Bing and Ruth; and Polish composer and pianist Hania Rani. Plus, a classic work by English composer and bassist Gavin Bryars.  UK-based sound artist Joseph Young evokes the voices of the past, and the complex histories of a Big House in Ireland - Bray’s Killruddery House & Gardens (dating from the 17th C.)- through field recordings, voice(s) and retro-futuristic sonic layering. His Sonic Hauntings in a Big House came out of a years-long practice-based PhD research project “focusing on aspects of sonic hauntology as it relates to the heritage space” (Bandcamp liner notes). Hear several pieces from his debut recording. The transatlantic “doom folk” singer and songwriter Cinder Well weaves together traditional folk, ambient drone, and doom metal's space in one dark and trancey tapestry. Her music often has a haunted, nocturnal quality and is also informed by traditional forms and tunes of County Clare, even as she adds haunting and meditative soundscapes to her original tunes. Hear her song, “Our Lady’s’” - imagined stories of spectral abandoned asylum residents, with a unique point of view. Plus, a ghost of Brooklyn’s past appears in music by Bing and Ruth; there are half-heard voices from the past in music by Polish pianist, composer and singer Hania Rani, and listen to some of a classic by Gavin Bryars – his work, The Sinking of the Titanic. - Caryn Havlik Program #4977, Sonic Hauntings  (First aired 2/12/2025) ARTIST: Joseph YoungWORK: Is there a Ghost in the House?
