New Sounds

#4991, Borrowed Vocal Styles

Episode Summary

Listen to borrowed vocal styles from around the world, from Tuvan and Inuit throat singing, classical Hindustani vocals, and three-part harmonies from the Republic of Georgia.  There’s traditional music from Republic of Georgia with the three-part close harmonies, and then music that riffs on vocal sounds both a song by Kate Bush and from Amsterdam-based musician Asa Horvitz’s multimedia project, GHOST. Listen also to the earthquake rumblings of the Kargyraa style of Tuvan throat singing in music from American bluesman Paul Pena. Then, in the Pulitzer Prize-winning work Partita, by composer, violinist, and vocalist Caroline Shaw, the styles range from high-pitched Tuvan throat singing, Inuit throat singing, Sardinian  polyphonic folk singing, Korean vocal styles, and American shape note hymns. Listen to a movement of Caroline Shaw’s “Partita for 8 voices,” performed by the vocal group Roomful of Teeth. Plus, hear music from Terry Riley, playing two Prophet Five synthesizers and singing over the top in the classical Hindustani style. - Caryn Havlik Program #4991, Borrowed Vocal Styles ARTIST: Paul PenaWORK: Kargyraa Moan  [1:00]RECORDING: Genghis BluesSOURCE: Six DegreesINFO: genghisblues.bandcamp.com or available at Amazon.com ARTIST: The Other GeorgiaWORK: Tsintsqaro [4:07]RECORDING: Ancient Harmonies from a Distant LandSOURCE: The Other GeorgiaINFO: Available at AppleMusic, Amazon.com, YouTube, Spotify ARTIST: Kate BushWORK: Hello Earth [6:13]RECORDING: Hounds of Love SOURCE: EMI America RecordsINFO: Available at AppleMusic, Amazon.com, YouTube, Spotify ARTIST: Asa Horvitz, Carmen Quill, Ariadne Randall, Wayne HorvitzWORK: To Understand The Story [5:02]RECORDING: GHOSTSOURCE: Celestial ExcursionsINFO: https://celestialexcursionsghost.bandcamp.com/album/ghost ARTIST: Paul PenaWORK: Kargyraa Moan [4:19]RECORDING: Genghis BluesSOURCE: Six DegreesINFO: genghisblues.bandcamp.com or available at Amazon.com ARTIST: Nellie Nungak & Mary SivuarapikWORK: Mother Singing Baby to Sleep [:25]RECORDING:  Inuit Throat and Harp SongsSOURCE: Canadian Music Heritage CollectionINFO: Try Discogs.com ARTIST: Roomful of TeethWORK: Caroline Shaw: Partita for 8 Voices – Courante [8:59]RECORDING: Roomful of TeethSOURCE: New Amsterdam NWAM 041INFO: roomfulofteeth.org ARTIST: Terry RileyWORK: Embroidery [6:14]RECORDING: Songs for the Ten Voices of the Two ProphetsSOURCE: Celestial Harmonies#12047INFO: harmonies.com
