Episode Summary

There's music that was played on the first edition of New Sounds, Sept. 3, 1982, with music by ambient pioneer Brian Eno with and without guitarist, composer, and producer Robert Fripp; multi-disciplinary artist Laurie Anderson; and American minimalist composer Steve Reich. Also, minimalist composer Philip Glass makes a special appearance and presents music from the World Festival of Sacred Music.  From the World Festival of Sacred Music, co-curated by Philip Glass, and recorded in 2001 at Merkin Hall, listen to the sweet sounds of a trombone shout choir, The McCollough Sons of Thunder, led by Elder Edward Babb;  a solo improvisation by Native American flutist of Navajo and Ute heritage R. Carlos Nakai, and a call to prayer by Kuwaiti-born Egyptian-American Sufi imam, author, and activist Faisal Abdul Rauf.
